Senior Estimator Required

  • B & M McHugh is looking for a full-time Senior Estimator experienced in building refurbishments based at one of our offices in New Eltham, Basingstoke or Copthorne.
  • The successful applicant will be expected to:

    • Understand the tender pipeline in the medium/short term and procure/recruit the skills in the Estimating team to develop successful bids.
    • Manage the central library of supporting information for bids.
    • Manage the Estimating process overall.
    • Lead Bids, developing and implementing winning bid strategies and providing the engineering and operations team with the support they need to develop winning proposals.
    • Provide guidance and coaching to Project teams on submitting successful technical supporting information on Pre-Quals and Tenders.
    • Ensure tender and Pre Qual documentation is received checked and handled in line with company procedures, maintaining the enquiry tracking database, including allocation of enquiry and contract numbers.
    • Work closely with the Bid and Project teams to understand customer drivers and develop winning strategies for bids.
    • Ensure tenders are evaluated and tender action plans prepared in line with the Bid strategy, estimating guidelines and directives on margin and cost and are submitted to deadlines.
    • Carry out the role of Estimator on certain Bids.
    • Coordinate the team to work in collaboration with colleagues from across the business preparing and submitting accurately costed and competitive bids.
    • Coach the Estimators on pricing practice and the proposals team/operations teams on responding to questions and writing winning proposals; e.g. identifying and explaining benefits, discriminators, ghosting techniques and presenting technical information in a logical manner.
    • Ensure Estimators compile the price in a thorough, logical and consistent manner and ensuring the finalised estimate is properly signed off in accordance with Procedures.
    • Attend meetings with the Construction, Delivery Commercial or Design teams as required both during and post tender.
    • Provide the Commercial team with information and support so they can agree final terms and sign off on the contract.
    • Ensure risk and opportunities are identified and properly evaluated to develop a winning submission.
    • Managing and motivating the team; linking personal development goals with the company’s objectives wherever possible.

    Desired Skills and Experience:

    • At least 5-10 years estimating/bid management experience with involvement in infrastructure projects in the construction industry, ideally in Rail, Building and M & E.
    • Higher level (HNC or Degree) Qualification in construction, engineering or related discipline.
    • Have functional/technical skills associated with the field of Estimating and Bid Management.
    • Communicates clearly with a good command of oral and written English.
    • IT proficient in MS Office, in particular Excel and any other relevant software. Experience in Causeway will be advantageous.
    • Experienced in leading and developing a diverse team including managing performance and skills development.
    • Keeps a customer focus managing client and all stakeholder expectations.
    • Skilled problem-solving making sound decisions based on good analysis and understanding of situations.
    • Holds a full driving licence.
