Brightening Futures: LED Lighting Transformation at Orchard Primary School

We're proud to share our recent project at Orchard Primary School in Sidcup, commissioned by LB Bexley’s Major Projects department. Our dedicated electrical team successfully completed a full upgrade, replacing 274 outdated fluorescent light fittings with modern, energy-efficient LED units. This transformation not only slashes energy consumption and reduces CO2 emissions but also enhances the school's learning environment with improved lighting and aesthetics.

Delivered on time and within budget, this project left both our client and the school community delighted with the outcome!

Project Pumpkin Bares Fruit

As a passionate gardener and member of the local "Purley in Bloom" team, our staff member Dave initiated Project Pumpkin at the beginning of the year. Using a spare plot of land behind the Eltham office, Dave transformed a 20-square-meter patch of wasteland into a pumpkin patch.

The plan was to sow 100 seeds and prepare the area for planting. However, the first batch was quickly devoured by squirrels, leading to a second round of sowing. As the seedlings thrived in Dave’s greenhouse, further preparations were made to ready the land for planting.

Once the seedlings were transferred to the ground, the bees from our seven McHugh beehives took over the task of pollination. Remarkably, the pumpkins grew throughout the summer without the need for fertilizing, weeding, or watering.

With the crop maturing, Dave reached out to clients within the Bromley local authority contract to donate the pumpkins. He connected with the Age Concern Saxon Day Centre in Orpington and the Griffin SEN School in Locks Bottom, both of which were delighted by the donation and used the pumpkins for carving, decoration, and cooking.

After a successful harvest, the largest pumpkin, weighing 9.5 kg, was kept for display in the office reception. The rest were washed and delivered to the Griffin SEN School and the Age Concern Saxon Day Centre. With the help of our boiler engineer, Stephen, the pumpkins were handed over, and staff and residents at both locations were immensely grateful for the generous contribution.

Forging partnerships with the local community

Several months ago, we invited students and Course Leaders from Abingdon & Witney College to visit our Gasworks Pipe Bridge restoration project in Oxford to view recent progress and discuss a steel donation to help engineering students with their practical skills.

As a result, we recently made the short trip to Abingdon to deliver a selection of surplus steel from the project.

The College’s Head of Faculty for Technology commented: “It’s vitally important for our students and apprentices to get practical welding experience as part of their course. We are extremely grateful for B&M McHugh's kind donation of steel off-cuts which will be invaluable for our students practising their welding skills in the workshop. The exciting partnership will enhance the learning experience for our welding students and will give them the opportunity to hone their skills in the College’s workshop for their future careers.”

We all have to start somewhere and the best way to learn is by practising. It’s great that we can use our off-cuts to help the next generation of local welders and mechanical engineers to forge their careers.

We normally re-use or re-cycle off-cuts, but we felt that this steel donation was an opportunity to help students in our local community. We are looking forward to developing our community outreach and our relationships with other local businesses and organisations.
